The Story Behind the Psalm by Dr. Hyles
The father is talking to his son. Perhaps this father is Solomon. Perhaps the son is Rehoboam, who succeeded him on the throne. Solomon is teaching Rehoboam the way to blessedness and is warning him about the destruction of those who follow evil. In some ways it may be regarded as a preface to the rest of the Psalms. Perhaps it is a summary of what is to come later, for is it not true that all of the Psalms teach us the blessedness of living a holy and righteous life and the danger of living a life for self and sin.
The Way It Was Used by God's People
The Jews used the first Psalm as instruction to children in family worship. It was memorized by each child and quoted and sung over and over again. Wise parents teach this Psalm to their children unto this day. Fathers gather the family together and explain the beautiful recipe for success given in this Psalm, as follows: Walking not in the counsel of the ungodly, plus standing not in the way of sinners, plus sitting not in the seat of the scornful, plus delighting in the law of the Lord, plus meditating in the Word of God day and night equals success.
It is interesting to note that the word "blessed" in verse 1 is a plural word in the original. It means that there are a multiplicity of blessings which rest upon the person who observes the five conditions for prosperity and success. The Psalm should be read with a mental picture of a father talking with his son, counseling with him and advising him about life. Emphasis should be placed upon seeking counsel only from the saved, running with the right crowd, not developing a critical tongue, enjoying the Word of God and meditating therein. Then, a warning should be given concerning the instability and tragic results of sin.
FLU
Even when you go back into your daily routine, you now carry an unwelcome visitor that was not there before. It soon becomes rooted inside and although it takes a while to take hold… eventually it begins to take over. Your body cannot fight the germ any more, you feel odd, and know that something is not right. Something is just a little…off. Pretty soon you begin to feel the effects stronger and stronger until you have no doubt that you have been overcome and are without hope. The virus has taken hold of you and has dug its way so far down inside and multiplied and consumed your body till it can no longer function properly.
You feel queasy, and confused and vomity. The fever begins to rage inside of you and your body is no longer your own. You can not continue living your normal life, everything you would usually do comes to a screeching halt as you resolve to the fact that you are a prisoner to this disease that has taken over your body.
Wrapped up in your blanket, shaking and trying to fight off what shouldn’t have even been inside of you in the first place, you feel repentive and remember that hand you shook and elbow you rubbed that shared their horrible virus with you and know immediately that it was all your fault and you should have never been there.
The only thing you can do is pray and hydrate and rest, leaning on the Holy Spirit to mend and heal and help you like a medicine that is the only thing that can sooth and calm the heat that is tearing up your body. Like a salve He comes to comfort, a cool water that eases the fever inside of you. Slowly, with a lot of grace and consistence…little by little you feel your strength being restored. Feeling weak and vulnerable, you lean heavy on Him, depending on Him to get you through. He forgivingly offers relief from the pain, allowing you to rest heal.
When you come out of it, you will be tired and drained and weak. But God can restore you to full health, though many will still carry the scars with them for weeks and months.
The worst part about it is those around you that you have unknowingly infected with your virus. Bringing it back to your friends, your family, your children…leaving them vulnerable and knowing that if they become infected that it was YOU who brought it to them.
Sin is a virus…like the flu. Once you are exposed, you may have to go through a whole process of getting things right and restoring your life to God. Or, you can just rot and die….many people do die from the flu you know. Every year we lose people to this common every day illness. Why do they die? Because they are weak, not healthy, don’t have the proper medicines, or are unable to heal. We lose many to sin this way too. Those who are unsaved and have no help from the Holy Spirit to get them out of their sin, or no doctor who has the remedy to help them. Soul winners, I’m talking to you. Maybe they love that sin so much they refuse to let it go and it multiplies and becomes too great a burden for their body.
We have the great gift being born with a body God made able to heal itself when attacked…and a chance to repent, again and again for the wrongs that we do. He could have been unforgiving for all the wrongs we do…but instead He is a forgiving God that will love you and take care of us even when we purposefully infect ourselves with the wrong things. Praise the Lord for a God who restores and heals.

What is a Fundamentalist?
First the word is “Fun”:
It is fun to be a fundamentalist. We can have fun in spite of so-called “restrictions”. Instead of thinking of standards as restrictions, we must see them as protectors, and realize the freedom we have within them. It can be fun; we make fundamentalism what we wish it to be. We do not quit living; we do not quit having good, decent, and honest fun.
Then we have the word “Fund”:
The fundamentalists are funded by their own congregations. We are independent of government funding, and of funds from a headquarters or denominational board. No “convention” or corporation of churches for us, and we answer only to the Lord. The funds are the tithes and offerings of the people, and are the sole responsibility of the local church.
Next we see the word “a”:
“Individualism” that’s what fundamentalism is. The word “a” describes the singular, with each fundamentalist being able to serve in the capacity that the Lord moves him to, and is not concerned so much with the traditions of men.
Now, the word “amen”:
“Amen” means “so be it” or “it is so”. It is a definite declaration, an assurance that he knows the Truth and will stick by it at all cost. It has become a word of agreement, an assent to ideas, principles, and concepts of truth. The fundamentalist lives by these principles; he will take a stand for what is right.
Now we see the word “mental”:
The fundamentalist uses his head for more than a hat rack! He is a thinker; a doer; and He weighs his thoughts by the scale of God’s Word. His meditations are upon “the law of the Lord” day and night, and he walks in the comfort of God’s grace. He allows the Bible to tell him what kinds of thoughts he should have, and not mans politics or customs. Goodness and right just make sense to him.
Now, a strange word, “mentalist”:
A “mentalist” believes that some phenomena cannot be explained by natural means; he believes in miracles and a miracle working God. A mentalist is a thinker; he is known for being level headed and realistic.
Finally, “list”;
Every fundamentalist has a “list” of things he lives by. They may not be written in a notebook, but they are defined and obvious to him. They are all that is good and proper, and that glorifies the Father. He weighs his actions according to this list.
No Short Cuts
12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.
13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.
14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.(Hebrews 5:12–14).

Redeeming the Time
David’s brothers were no doubt shepherds, as he was, but they did not have the walk with God that David had. They did not use the time wisely, and meditate upon the things of God as David did. They did not develop the character that David had because when they were lying on a hillside, watching the flock by night, they idled away their time. They did not pray and study God’s Word, as David did. They had no song in their heart, as he did, and had nothing to sing about anyway! David had even invented a stringed instrument in which to sing praises unto God with; no, his time was not wasted as he sat there for hours watching the flock of his father. David was busy writing songs and praising God. His brothers had the same chance that he had, but wasted their time doing other things. What made the difference? The way they served, and sought, the Lord.
When the time came to choose a king, David was not even in the running as far as men were concerned, and yet, God had different plans. God had been preparing him for the throne on the hillside. Redeeming the time made the difference in the life of David, and it still makes a difference in our lives today. There is enough evil in the day without wasting our time and thoughts on worldly things; we are not going to make a great impact by seeking after those things. The thing that will make an impact are the things of God; the mountain-movers of faith. Philippians 4:8 tells us what we need to keep our minds on “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” If it doesn’t fit these guidelines, it isn’t worth thinking about! We are too busy with the “business” of this world, and not busy enough in the business of the Lord. David redeemed the time by meditating upon the right things; there is no better way to spend our time, and increase our strength in the Lord, than by meditating on Him and His Word. That is the key to true success. I would say that David was successful in all that he did, but why was that? Because he constantly sought the Lord’s leading; he kept his mind on the right things.
Living and Dead
“For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.” (v. 9)
In Christ I died, and will live no more; in me He lives and will die no more. You see, I am in Him, and He in me, but my life is not life, and that leaves only His! He is everything; I am nothing, (v. 18). It is not my life that matters any more, but His only. I live only as He lives in me. When His perfect life mingles with my imperfect life, there is no comparison. My friend, it is that way with all of us. We are flesh, dirty, evil, and very fickle. We are fearful, and deceitful, but He is all that is good and right. I would rather have His life in me than my own!
I used to think I had life; I thought that the way I was living was all there was for us, and it is, if we ignore Calvary. I had no life, but a mere existence. As a ghoul, I was among the living dead. I walked; I talked; I schemed and planned, but to no real avail because He was missing in my life. I searched for truth; I sought after delights; I chased the dreams of man, but found frustration and confusion. I thought I was really living, when all the time I was dead. There is no life without Christ. I wrote a poem that sums up my life quite well:
Been there
I’ve been down the road of evil,
And past the gates of hell;
I’ve laughed at “laudy” goodness
As my woeful heart will tell;
I’ve tickled every fancy,
And chased the elusive dream;
I’ve licked the bottom of the barrel,
And lapped the delicate cream.
I’ve fought many battles,
I’ve known the enemies fears;
I’ve laughed the laugh of victory,
And cried with bitter tears:
I’ve been up and down the road of life,
I’ve sparked many schemes;
I’ve “been there” and back again,
And heard life’s awesome screams.
I’ve played with sin on every hand,
Amid the sorrows and the cries;
Followed the winsome ways of man,
And lifted up these wretched eyes;
And looked to Jesus, that Blessed Hope,
Now that weary life has changed,
‘Twas He that taught my heart to cope,
My thoughts, my dreams, been re-arranged.
In all I’ve done and all I’ve and seen,
With great rejoicing I can say,
My life is purged, I’ve been made clean,
Now I live, to serve another day;
With a heart that’s helpless on its own,
And with a joyful heart of love;
I’ve been strengthened these years I’ve grown,
‘Cause I’ve embraced the Lord above.

Amazing Grace
At one point, several of the crew tried to throw Newton overboard. They figured that God was punishing him like Jonah of the Old Testament. The captain declared that the only way the ship would make it in to safe harbor was by God’s power. He commanded everyone—including Newton—to pray. “God, if You’re true,” Newton prayed earnestly, “make good your Word. Cleanse my vile heart.”
After four weeks of storms and constant brushes with death, the ship limped into an Irish port. John Newton, former “free thinker,” former slave trader and atheist, declared his faith in Jesus. He became a well-known preacher and writer. In fact, we chiefly know him as the author of the hymn “Amazing Grace.”

Thankfulness—A key to Prosperity
Dr. Bob Jones Sr. said that “a man that is unthankful is nigh well hopeless” and he was not exaggerating at all. You see, thankfulness begins in the heart then it finds its way up to the mouth—it is conditioned on character, and it grows stronger with exercise. Unthankfulness, therefore is a heart condition, and not a matter of a mere lack of manners. Don’t you think that the Lord appreciates our attitude when we are thankful for His blessings? Psalm 100: 4 tells us to “enter into His gates with thanksgiving”, and the word “thanks” alone is mentioned 37 times in the New testament alone. (With 36 in the Old Testament).
Look at Romans 1:21, “Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.” God mentions that these were not thankful, as if that was a part of the reason for their spiritual demise. Then is Col. 3:15, we have a command to be thankful. Thankfulness is an important commodity in the Christian life, and a key to greater blessings from God.

"SHAKE IT OFF AND STEP UP"
Initially, the old mule was hysterical! But as the farmer and his neighbors continued shoveling and the dirt hit his back... a thought struck him. It suddenly dawned on him that every time a shovel load of dirt landed on his back... HE SHOULD SHAKE IT OFF AND STEP UP! This he did, blow after blow."Shake it off and step up... shake it off and step up... shake it off and step up!" he repeated to encourage himself. No matter how painful the blows, or distressing the situation seemed the old mule fought "panic" and just kept right on SHAKING IT OFF AND STEPPING UP!You're right! It wasn't long before the old mule, battered and exhausted, stepped triumphantly over the wall of that well! What seemed like it would bury him, actually blessed him... all because of the manner in which he handled his adversity.

That's life! If we face our problems and respond to them positively, and refuse to give in to panic, bitterness, or self-pity... the adversities that come along to bury us usually have within them the potential to benefit and bless us! Remember that forgiveness, faith, prayer, love, praise and hope... all are excellent ways to "SHAKE IT OFF AND STEP UP" out of the wells in which we find ourselves!

Stones
“A basket of purple stones has been filled for Kinley. Please take one home with you and place it somewhere to be seen each day as a reminder of Kinley's strength. Let it be a reminder that you may never know what burden is carried by others around you. On days you are feeling frustrated, have more patience.”At mine, I would wish my family to use a basket of white stones with a reference to:
He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it. (Revelation 2:17 KJV)
And a note that "I’ve gone to pick up my stone with my new name on it – keep this one as a reminder that there is one for you, too."
You see, I believe that life is eternal. I believe the Bible where it is written:
In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. (John 14:2 KJV)
The Kingdom of Heaven is described in so many different places in the Bible that these pages cannot hold the verses. Matthew gives the greatest number of examples, in Christ’s parables and as John the Baptist spoke:
And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. (Matthew 3:2 KJV)
Many have become impatient, thinking that a couple of thousand years disproves the at hand, and therefore the remainder of the message. We were told not to be concerned:
But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. (2 Peter 3:8 KJV)
So, whether it be one day, two or three, my faith remains as to my eternal home. It was promised to me in the first verse taught to me as a child:
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (John 3:16 KJV)
As Christ said, so I would have you know that I believe, when I go to Him, If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I. (John 14:28b KJV)
Charity!
We begin here, a very misunderstood, and mistranslated study: That is that this is often termed the "love" chapter, but it actually refers to exactly what it says, charity. The meaning here is exactly what it is today for charity, the true essence of love.
Is not charity, (charitableness) often the least practiced, and hardest of the graces? Giving to the poor is a major teaching throughout the Bible. There is more said on this subject than on most other major doctrines, yet it is the least accomplished among the brethren.
We give to many things, many causes, but ought always to give to a need. ("alms" in Mt. 6). This sort of giving, aside from tithes and offerings, is the only giving endorsed in the New Testament!
The point here is, though I am good with words, gifted with a "golden tongue" it is nothing without a charitable, compassionate heart. It begins with compassion in the heart, and comes through the hand in an act of charitable alms. The noise of speech is nothing until it is backed up by the compassion of the heart. Even ethereal gifts, though bestowed by God, mean little without a heart of compassion and a hand of giving. "Nothing" to be recognized or exalted, as we often do with those so possessed of great gifts. We are nothing without charity.
Here we enter the realm of the heart; we can, and do give much to charity without the compassion of the heart. Charity begins in the heart. Much of our giving is for our own glory, or to magnify others, or for rewarding a favor or thought toward us, this is not true charity, neither is it true giving even. We see this much today from Hollywood; these "givers" desire publicity, a name called "philanthropist" for their almsdeeds. Though the money helps the cause, it is given wrongly, for one's own glory or profit. Though I give all, if I have not the right attitude in giving, "it profiteth me nothing."
Now, another phase of charity, and what is does, or does not (v. 4). The works of, and workings of, charity. This is a true measure of our giving, does it measure up? It is patient in its duration; it is given rightly, in kindness, without malice or hope of gain; it does not toot a horn before it, drawing attention to the giver; and is not proud and boastful in its operation.
To continue the definition of true charity, we see it does not misbehave itself, or is not represented by the hopes of attracting the attentions of the recipient, for favors owed, etc.; never seeks its own glory or gain, as already mentioned, but repeated for emphasis; and it is not easily dissuaded, or turned back in its cause; and it never even nurtures the thought of any other evil not mentioned, if there be any. Charity takes no pleasure in evil, and in falsehood, but is open and honest in all dealings. Charity does not look for "loopholes" in its methods, but functions in integrity and sincerity. It bears all, believes all, hopes all, and endures all for charities’ sake, and not for the sake of self. Charity carries its own armor, and is discouraged by nothing. It never fails in its purpose, because Truth cannot fail. Though many gifts do fail, charity is not affected by their demise. It is not tarnished, nor marred by any things outside of itself. Even the honest gifts, run their course, and become unuseful when we reach the blessed shores of Heaven, but charity endures, it lasts forever, because it is love in the heart. Though needs cease, compassion never will, never can.
Charity is eternal, not temporal. We live in a world of temporal things, all which will pass away with time, but charity, or this kind of love, never fails, it goes on and on forever. When the time comes, these things reach their peak and their usefulness is fulfilled, as tools and blessings for the saints, but charity will go on with us to glory, and beyond!
Here, in v. 11, Paul begins an illustration to make his point strong, we outgrow many things, but never outgrow our need for true charity; it is in our hearts, although the hand may cease. It is God-given, and therefore everlasting, it is God within us, the hope of glory. God is love, (1 Jn. 4:8), He "so loved the world that He gave..." (Jn. 3:16), and keeps on giving. This is the heart of charity. When we learn to give, unconditionally, as God gives, we begin to understand charity.
These things are hard to be understood, because our vision is fogged over in this life, because we are but flesh. Just as we have limited sight, we also have limited knowledge, and cannot fully comprehend the grace of giving, of charity, until that blessed day that we shall see Christ, charity incarnate! Yes, His life was a life of constant giving, and it fit all the previous conditions of true charity. “God is love” and Christ is charity.
What a statement in v. 13! The emphasis is on what we consider to be the least important of these graces. Though mentioned last, it is exalted to the highest position. ("the first shall be last, and the last first") , Charity, in its proper respect, is greater than them all; it is Christ, the King of Love, and the creator and executer of compassions; it is Christ in one word and action.
Are We Playing to Win?
During these days of testing our strength will be challenged!
1. Let's Be Determined
D.L. Moody, "The world has yet to see what God will do with and for and through and in and by the man who is fully consecrated to Him."
2. Let's Be Dedicated
Weariness can interfere with our dedication. We must the run the race with a fervent spirit. Hebrews 12:1-3
3. Let's Be Deliberate
Keep our eyes fixed on the win that has been promised to us so that we may have crowns to cast at his feet

9/4 Fundamental Thoughts
Today's "Proverbs for Breakfast"
Proverbs 4:23 Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.
Verse 23 tells us to give attention to our heart: faint, foolish, willing, pure, heard, rebellious, sad, broken, heavy, rash, perfect, deceitful - what is your heart like today?
Our thoughts and intents don't origniate in our minds, but rather in our hearts. Consider these verses:
Zechariah 7:10
Matthew 9:4
Hebrews 4:12
Sin stems from the heart; we are born with "spiritual heart disease".
Matthew 15:19 "For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:"
The only cure for this disease is to turn to God, repent of our sins, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, accept His payment on the cross of Calvary to pay our sin debt, and with our heart, believe on Him.
Romans 10:9, 10 "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation."
"This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin. Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; And having an high priest over the house of God; Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water." - from Hebrews 10
Reasonable Service
http://www.barberville.net/sermon236.htm
Text: Romans 12:1 & 2
Introduction: What is reasonable? What does it mean? It means that it is achievable. It means that it is expected. It is God’s expectations for our lives. It is what He expects out of His children.
I. Living Sacrifice – V.1
Phil. 2:14 – 17 “14 Do all things without murmurings and disputings: 15 That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world; 16 Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain. 17 Yea, and if I be offered upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I joy, and rejoice with you all.”
A. We are to bring ourselves to God. Putting our lives on the altar rather than dead animals.
B. God wants you.
1. Mind
2. Soul
3. Body
C. Our life should be a sacrifice for God and Others – example: Jesus
1. Time
2. Talents
3. Tithe
II. Holiness – V.1
A. Holy Living
Heb. 12:14 “Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:”
B. Is Possible With God’s Help
2 Cor. 9:8 “And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:”
C. Requirement
III. Acceptable Living
A. Living God’s Way
B. Loving God’s Way
C. According to God’s Word
IV. Reasonable Service
A. Expected Everyday
B. Guide For Living
C. Motives
Conclusion: Is your life acceptable to God. How would you rate yourself on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being acceptable according to God’s Standards not man’s.
Illustration: Ministry is giving when you feel like keeping, praying for others when you need to be prayed for, feeding others when your own soul is hungry, living truth before people even when you can't see results, hurting with other people even when your own hurt can't be spoken, keeping your word even when it is not convenient, it is being faithful when your flesh wants to run away.
There’s Forgiveness
Don’t struggle alone, in fear and distress As if there’s no hope, just your ugliness. Our Lord offers grace, not judgment deserving, He longs for your love and your soon returning. There’s forgiveness. It’s tough cutting through the darkness of sin Striving for answers, His favor to win. He stands with His arms outstretched and extended To hold and restore you, just mercy intended. There’s forgiveness. Why search other places your answers to find To fill the vast void and touch the divine. Lay down your excuses and learn to confess Your sins and your shame to His holiness. There’s forgiveness. There’s healing and fellowship waiting for you The moment you turn, His face to pursue. You are the temple, His place for abiding, The only thing missing is your mind deciding. There’s forgiveness. Don’t wait for a feeling or mystical lark, Just bow down in quietness, open your heart. Be honest, and tell Him no secret to keep From there He restores you to fellowship sweet. There’s forgiveness. His promise is certain, “I will forgive,” Cleansing and freedom, it’s yours to live. From no other source full joy will you find. He is your victory, your peace so sublime. There’s forgiveness. To humble yourself, before Him in prayer, Is your first step, in unloading your care. There look Him squarely, straight in the face And tell Him all of the ways you disgrace. There’s forgiveness. Refreshment and fullness He will restore The moment you sincerely open the door. He is the life you thought you could win, By going your way and living in sin. There’s forgiveness. There’s no one beyond the reach of His arm To pick up and pardon, to rescue from harm. Return to the Master of your faith’s beginning. Give Him your all, and you’ll find yourself winning. There’s forgiveness. What wonderful love eternity holds, For those who are willing to be in the fold. The Savior is waiting, Oh come to Him now, At His nail-scarred feet, in humility bow. There’s forgiveness.
Lord bless,
